Last week on the style blog, we were talking about the best ways to survive the summer heat. One of the best ways to stay cool in the summer is by switching to lighter fabrics. The relationship between the four different seasons and fabric is an important part of the BJ Wilson Wardrobe Process™. Fabrics in a wardrobe change from season to season, and necessarily so. Clothing helps us adjust to weather variations and changes in climate. Different fabrics will warm us on cold days and cool us on hot days. All fashion experts should understand the seasonal appropriateness of fabrics and how they correlate to the seasons.
Spring fabrics must accommodate temperatures that can fluctuate between warm and cold. Fabrics such as tropical wool, spring cashmere, canvas, and cotton are perfect choices for springtime. To transition a winter wardrobe into spring, add spring pieces in new colors, prints, and patterns.
Summer fabrics absorb perspiration and allow air-flow for a fresher feeling on hot days. Cotton, silk, and linen are summer fabrics that are commonly worn in warmer climates. Cotton is especially popular, as it is cool, breathable and comfortable. With changes in color and weight, cotton and silk are two fabrics that can transition through every season.
Fall is traditionally on the warm side. To keep cool on hot fall days, you want to layer pieced made from woven cotton, spandex, and silk. To transition a wardrobe into fall, choose colors darker than those worn in spring or summer. Fall clothes can go forward into winter because of their ability to be layered.
Winter fabrics include various wools, such as worsted, cashmere, Angora, and blends. Other fabrics that beat back cold temperatures, blistering winds, and dampness are leather, tweed, and different types of knits. In general, Fall/Winter fabrics are more durable than Spring/Summer fabrics.
