Is Your Closet Ready for Spring?

Posted on February 14, 2019

Can you believe we are already half-way through the month of February? Right off the bat, 2019 is already flying by at record speed. With the Winter season soon coming to an end, we’ve officially set our sights for our Spring Wardrobe.

If you’ve been following our style blogs over the past few weeks, you’ve seen our predictions for the popular colors, trends and major style statements for the approaching Spring season. But what’s a gal to wear during this weird-weathered ‘between the seasons’ time? Many of our clients struggle to dress during transitional seasons – but the Winter to Spring shift is by far one of the trickiest. Especially here in North Texas, where one day it can be 85 degrees and the next one in the 40s.

Transitional seasons tend to be the most overlooked times of the year fashion-wise, not only in our client’s closets but in the retail world also. The switch from Winter to Spring can be intimidating for even the most vetted fashionista, so we chatted with some of our wardrobe consultants to get their expert tips on how to prepare your Spring wardrobe.

Making The Switch

As mentioned in BJ Wilson’s book, An Expert’s Guide to Fashion Styling: A Workbook and Practical Guide, “… A proper transitional wardrobe integrates key spring elements, such as a spring jacket or spring trench coat in a bright color. Spring Scarves, umbrellas and colored handbags are easy to add to a winter outfit. Spring is about layering and keeping warm. It is also about finding a balance between winter and summer.”

The goal is to never thoughtlessly combine pieces of your winter and spring clothing but to coordinate items in that help bring you into the new season stylishly and appropriately. Now is the perfect time to start welcoming the new trends and colors for the upcoming season into your closet.

Five Changes to Make Now

Below is a no-fail, user-friendly, minimally invasive guide to “springifying” your wardrobe. Without spending a lot of money and without any second thoughts on what is or isn’t “seasonally appropriate”, our stylists have broken down 5 easy ways to shift your sights to Spring. Chances are, you already own a lot of the items on our must-haves list!

Going from Dark to Light

Spring Wardrobe

Spring signals the time for introducing lighter colors into the wardrobe. Trade out your dark wash denim and black skinny jeans for fresh, light colors and looser fits by adding a new cropped flare or girlfriend cut jean. We’ve often been told that dark denim is the dressier option, but we beg to differ! Dress up a great pair of white jeans with some fun metallic accessories and a chic animal print blouse like this snakeskin ruffled top by Rebecca Taylor and voilà, you have the perfect outfit for any special occasion.

How Low Can You Go?

Spring Wardrobe

Now’s the to stuff some empty wine bottles in your tall riding boots and store them away until next Fall. Bring out the lighter colored neutral and spring colored ankle booties, mules and slides. For those cooler spring days, you can still opt for an ankle bootie in nubuck or a different light color, but with so many new shoe trends for Spring, why not try something new? Flats are coming back in style for 2019 – be the trendsetter of your friend group by incorporating this hot shoe trend into your Spring wardrobe first. For those days that feel warmer and more like Spring, throw on a floral mule slide or bright colored sneaker. Best of all? These Springy shoes will pair perfectly with the lighter denim!

Bye-Bye Black Bag

Spring Wardrobe

One of the easiest ways to start introducing Spring colors into the wardrobe is through accessories. Say goodbye to the boring black handbag that carried your life through winter, and introduce some seasonal cheer to your wardrobe by adding a fun, new color instead. These colors will coordinate back with the basics of your wardrobe and most of the trendy prints for the season. We love the thought of a classic polka-dot blouse and jeans paired fun colored bag. The Answer is Sheer

Spring Wardrobe

For those of you ladies who have a more professional lifestyle and are required to wear hosiery to the office, our deepest condolences. But with that being said, it is time to store away your black and opaques for nudes and sheers. The goal is to match the color of your hosiery to your skin tone as close as possible. Not only will you look cooler by making the switch, but you’ll also feel cooler. If you are a little more fashion forward, try a nude fishnet or one with printed detailing.

See Ya, Cashmere and Fur!

Spring Wardrobe

Time to store away all of your furs, cashmere wraps, and shawls to create some space for the lighter fabrics for the new season. Swap out your heavy cashmere cloak or wrap for a fun printed or silk kimono. We are loving the styles by Free People and Etro, as always. Dress these flowy outerwear pieces up over a solid colored dress or down with your light colored denim. Whatever the occasion may be, this is the perfect outerwear choice for warmer transitional weather days.
