That dreaded moment that many women fear… That moment that gives us hives and drives us to abandon shopping baskets for a comforting milkshake or martini is once again upon us. It’s time once again to go shopping for a new swim suit. (Insert eye roll here). Yes, we know your pain. Your struggle. How the harsh lighting in those fitting rooms emphasizes how little we have been out in the sun because of all the rain this spring. Hopefully, with a little guidance, we can ease the pain a little. And if it helps you to have that martini BEFORE you go shopping, who are we to stop you? The trick to finding the right suit is the same trick as finding the perfect dress, and it all starts with your body shape. Emphasizing here, hiding there, what to pad, what to ruche and what to ruffle. We promise you will be beach ready in no time.
We have included a couple of our favorite styles within each category, but for more summer shopping inspo, check out our Summer Style Pinterest Boards.
While simply putting padding in a top could do the trick, sometimes that creates a look that is just a bit too….. risqué. Finding a suit with an embellished top, ruffles or other detail will create the illusion of more curves up top. Plunging necklines and lace-up details are something only you can wear, so embrace it!
The struggle is real my friends, I know this first hand. First and foremost, buy a suit with cup sizes rather than S, M, L. Yes, you will likely pay more, but it is worth it. Undrwires help to add support and halter necklines are great for keeping the girls contained.
Probably the most common area of concern in swimwear is the tummy. If you are still a fan of the two-piece, don’t let that little pouch stop you. A retro high-waisted bottoms allows you to show a little midriff and still be comfortable. In a one piece, look for suits with side-ruching or an all over print to camouflage the tummy.
Ladies with a booty, the string bikini sadly is not your friend. Look for suits with a full coverage bottom or a swim skirt. Solid bottoms with print tops draw the eye upwards. Yes, you can wear a two piece, but opt for a full coverage bikini style bottom rather than a high waist.
If you have more of an athletic body shape, you want to look for suits that give the illusion of curves. Padded tops, floral prints, ruffles and cut-out sides work well for you. Avoid bandeau tops and opt for a sweetheart style to add amp up the bust-line.
If there is little definition in your waist, well, we need to create one! Suits with an empire waist that emphasizes the smallest part of you are perfect for your body. A deep v-neckline elongates the body and draws the eye up to the face. Lastly, a suit with a wrap style gives the illusion of that coveted hourglass shape.
