Problems in the Fashion Retail Industry

The fashion industry faces many varying issues in regards to attracting and training young talent in retail. One of the biggest is the diminished number of retail training programs available as a direct result of the massive shifts taking place in the industry. Today’s new hires are missing the needed sales skills and knowledge that comes from fashion retail training.

A vast majority of today’s executive leaders in the fashion retail industry began their careers participating in management training programs. In these programs, they were taught different sales strategies and tactics, and exposed to hands-on education. New retail team members were able to see examples of a career path laid out by the executives who came before and had advanced from the bottom up. Today’s new hires are missing that – the education and the vision.

There is no denying that a career in fashion retail is extremely hard work. However, there are many jobs in retail that are motivating, challenging and gratifying. Although there has been a definite lack of mandated training in the industry, there is training available that can help those trying to break into the fashion styling and fashion retail industry successfully.

Resources for Career Success

BJ Wilson and Company, a Texas-based wardrobe consulting firm, has published multiple books that guide those looking to enter the world of fashion. The Fashion Cycle: Strategic Buying and Selling for Retail, Workbook and Guide written by BJ Wilson, is the new comprehensive guide to the basics of fashion styling and fashion retail.

You don’t necessarily need a fashion degree from the best fashion school in NYC, or have had the perfect internship to flourish in the business. All it takes is effective training and sales knowledge. Wilson’s “The Fashion Cycle” can help anyone gain this foundational education.

And while The Fashion Cycle is immensely helpful to those just starting out, it can also be used by universities and colleges who are looking to augment their fashion retail and merchandising programs. There is no doubt that there is a lack of training, both formal and informal, when it comes to the fashion industry.  The Fashion Cycle is helping to fix that one student at a time.
